Fractional Share Investing

Our Fractional Share Investing FAQ provides and insights and guidance on the ins and outs of fractional share investing, which has emerged as a popular and accessible way for investors to diversify their portfolios.

What is fractional share investing and how does it work?

Fractional share investing is an approach that allows investors to buy portions of a company’s stock rather than a whole share. This means you can invest in stocks with high per-share prices with lower initial capital. This method enables greater diversification, especially for investors with smaller portfolios.

At BBAE, we have a broad variety of stocks and ETFs available for fractional share trading. Here’s how it works:

  1. Choose the stock or ETF: You first select the security you wish to invest in, just like you would for whole share investments.
  2. Determine your investment amount: Instead of specifying the number of shares you wish to buy, you can specify the amount of money you want to invest in the chosen security.
  3. Execute the trade: When you confirm the trade, BBAE’s system will calculate the fraction of the share that corresponds to your investment amount and execute the trade accordingly.

Please note that fractional shares can’t be transferred to other brokerages, and not all securities are available for fractional share trading.

What is the difference between fractional share investing and traditional investing?

Fractional share investing and traditional investing represent two distinct methods of investing in the stock market.

  1. Traditional Investing: In traditional investing, investors purchase whole units of a company’s stock. For instance, if a single share of a company is priced at $1,000, you would need to invest a minimum of $1,000 to own a part of that company. This approach may limit the accessibility for individuals with lower amounts of investment capital, particularly when it comes to high-priced stocks.
  2. Fractional Share Investing: Fractional share investing, on the other hand, allows investors to buy a portion of a single share. So, even if a company’s stock price is $1,000, you can still invest if you have only $10, $20, or any other amount less than the full share price. This makes the stock market more accessible to a larger number of people and can also help in creating a diversified portfolio, even with limited investment capital.

To sum up, the main difference lies in the flexibility and affordability of investment. Fractional share investing lowers the financial barrier to entry, enabling more individuals to participate in the stock market and invest in companies that they believe in.

What are the benefits of fractional share investing?

Fractional share investing offers several benefits, which include:

  1. Affordability: Fractional shares make investing more affordable, especially for individuals who are just starting out or have limited capital. You can invest in stocks that may be too expensive to buy whole, making investing more accessible.
  2. Diversification: Because you’re not required to purchase whole shares, fractional share investing allows for greater diversification within your portfolio, even with limited funds. You can spread your investments across a wider variety of stocks and sectors.
  3. Flexibility: Fractional share investing provides flexibility as you can decide the exact dollar amount you want to invest, regardless of the stock’s price. This way, you can continually invest and grow your portfolio at a pace that suits your budget.
  4. Opportunity to own high-valued stocks: Some stocks, like those of top tech companies, are priced extremely high per share. Fractional shares enable you to participate in the financial performance of such companies without needing to spend a large sum on a whole share.
  5. Regular Investing: Fractional shares also make it easier to engage in regular investing (also known as dollar-cost averaging). You can contribute a set amount of money towards your investments at regular intervals, regardless of the price of individual shares.

By lowering the cost barrier to own a piece of a company, fractional shares have revolutionized investing, making it more inclusive and accessible to everyone.

Why can’t I cancel my fractional share order?

Fractional share orders cannot be cancelled once placed due to the unique handling process of these orders. The allocation and settlement of fractional shares involve complex procedures and systems, which begin as soon as an order is initiated. As a result, reversing these processes isn’t feasible once the order has been placed.

We understand this might lead to some inconvenience and therefore encourage our users to thoroughly review their order details before finalizing any fractional share transactions. This practice ensures you are fully confident in your investment decisions.
