This week, several stocks caught investors’ attention, driven by significant developments and market momentum. Here’s the breakdown of this week’s trending stocks:
AEye ($LIDR) Wins Lidar Contract for NASA-Backed Lunar Rover
AEye, Inc. ($LIDR), a company that develops software-defined lidar sensors used in vehicles, defense systems, and infrastructure, announced that its Apollo long-range lidar has been selected by Lunar Outpost for the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle, the rover intended to carry Artemis astronauts across the Moon’s surface.
Lidar works like radar but uses laser pulses instead of radio waves, creating a detailed 3D map of the surroundings. According to the company, Apollo will handle terrain perception, obstacle detection, and autonomous navigation for Pegasus as crews and mission operators move across the lunar surface.
AEye described the agreement as a multi-million-dollar contract award. The company said the deal expands its commercial footprint beyond its core automotive, defense, and industrial markets into space mobility, which it treats as a new market category tied to the wider buildout of lunar infrastructure.
According to the company, Lunar Outpost chose Apollo for its solid-state design, which is built to handle the vacuum, extreme temperature swings, and constant vibration of the lunar environment without any option for repair once deployed. AEye also pointed to the sensor’s software-defined architecture, which allows scan patterns and performance settings to be adjusted through software rather than fixed in hardware, and its compact size, which limits how much weight and space it takes up on the vehicle.
Lunar Outpost said the added perception capability is meant to let Pegasus travel safely and carry out autonomous operations as work begins on NASA’s planned Moon base at the lunar South Pole.
AEye noted in its filing-related disclosures that the contract may not produce revenue or commercial sales in the timeframe expected, and that the program depends in part on NASA’s Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services and Artemis programs continuing as planned.
Stock Price Reaction
$LIDR shares jumped about 28% following the announcement.
GoPro ($GPRO) to Merge with Starman Optical in $285 Million Cash Deal
GoPro, Inc. ($GPRO), the action camera maker known for its HERO line, announced that it has entered into a definitive merger agreement with Starman Optical, Inc., a privately held U.S. optical-photonics company.
Under the terms of the deal, GoPro shareholders will receive an aggregate cash payment of $285 million, or $1.14 per share, and will keep ownership of roughly 10% of the outstanding shares of the combined company. The per-share figure may be adjusted based on GoPro’s working capital at closing.
According to the company, GoPro’s outstanding debt of about $92 million will be repaid in full at closing, leaving the business substantially debt-free. GoPro will remain publicly listed on Nasdaq.
The stated purpose of the merger is to recapitalize GoPro and put its optics technology and patent portfolio of more than 2,500 U.S. patents to broader use. GoPro said it will continue supporting its existing consumer cameras and its subscription and cloud platform while investing in a wider product lineup.
Starman’s main contribution is U.S.-made optical transceivers, which are components that convert electrical signals into light and back again to move data at high speed inside data centers. The company said adding this business is expected to extend GoPro’s reach into the market for AI infrastructure, and that the combined company also intends to pursue defense, government, robotics, and aerospace customers.
Starman Holding CEO Charles Tebele said much of the hardware behind advanced optics and imaging is currently made overseas, and that the two companies intend to move production of those components back to the United States. GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said the merger is expected to help the company grow across consumer, commercial, and defense markets.
Both boards have approved the transaction. It is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, GoPro shareholder approval, and other customary conditions.
Stock Price Reaction
$GPRO shares closed at $1.69 in the session following the announcement, above the $1.14 per share cash portion of the deal.
Ultragenyx ($RARE) Reports Failed Phase 3 Trial in Angelman Syndrome
Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc. ($RARE), a biopharmaceutical company that develops treatments for rare and ultra-rare genetic diseases, announced that its Phase 3 Aspire study of apazunersen in Angelman syndrome did not meet its main goals.
Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that causes cognitive and motor impairment, balance problems, and seizures. Most people with the condition do not speak and require continuous care. There are currently no approved therapies for it, and the company estimates it affects roughly 60,000 people in markets where treatments could be sold.
According to the company, the trial missed both its primary endpoint, a measure of change in cognitive scores from the start of the study, and its key secondary endpoint, which combined five separate measures of patient improvement. Ultragenyx said the treated and control groups were similar at the start of the study, and that no differences emerged between them on either measure.
The company said the safety profile matched what was seen in earlier Phase 1/2 testing.
Chief Executive Emil Kakkis said the company was disappointed by the result, particularly for the patient community that had supported the early research. Ultragenyx said it will now decide what to do with the apazunersen program and will review its operations to implement significant expense reductions.
According to the company, it plans to focus on its commercial business, including the recently approved GENGLYCOS for glycogen storage disease type Ia, the potential approval of UX111 for Sanfilippo syndrome, and the expansion of existing products into new markets. Ultragenyx said it still expects to reach profitability in 2027.
Stock Price Reaction
$RARE shares fell about 40% following the announcement.
